‡) Lit.,  “yellow” or  “yellow book.”  Orig.,   in ref.  to crime & noir fiction,  called “giallo”  because of their lurid canary yellow paperback covers.  In the mid-to-late  1960s  giallo”  mainly became associated with Italian movies,  specifically gory psycho-sexual thrillers,  police procedurals,  & apocalypso horror genre films  (or mashups thereof)  by such directors as Mario Bava  &  Dario Argento  (&  they really mastered their cinematical shite in terms of shadows  &  light,  sight  &  sound,   &  cutting  &  cutting,   &  gouging  &  impaling  &  shooting   &  strangling   &   defenestrating ,  & had a major influence on filmmakers from Jean-Luc Godard (esp. Weekend)  to John Carpenter,  George Romero,   Wes Craven,   Robert Rodriguez  &  Quentin Tarantino.
